Hello! My name is Analhi Aguirre, and I’ve been a coordinator and professor of Spanish as a foreign language for over 15 years. I love sharing and teaching my native language and culture, as well as learning about other cultures and their ways of life.

A little bit about me

I specialize in Spanish language and literature, but I am very interested in cinema, TV series, music, French, different cuisines, geography, animals and the sea. I have lived in Argentina (my country of origin), Canada (Montreal) and now, I am located in the enormous Mexico City. In each of these places, I have always had my mate by my side. That is why I chose the typical Argentinian beverage as the symbol for my Spanish educational space.

Academic background

I am a professor of Modern Languages and Literatures (National University of Cuyo, Argentina), Master in Latin American Studies (National Autonomous University of Mexico), and PhD in Humanities with specialization in Literary Theory (Autonomous Metropolitan University, Mexico). I have studied and written extensively in my mother tongue, but I have also learned to teach it in order to transmit my knowledge. Teaching is a pleasure, a discipline and, above all, an expression of the will for your students to learn.

Experience

I’ve been teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language for 10 years in person (Argentina, Canada and Mexico) and 8 years online, from Mexico City. Altogether, my students have been and continue to be my school as a Spanish teacher. Through the close and friendly bonds we build, as well as my own training and constant updating of my Spanish, I continuously encounter new strategies and difficulties with regards to teaching. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, my students, for your love, patience, and, above all, your desire to learn.

Languages

I understand and speak French and English, so you can communicate with me in either of these languages without any problem – or in Spanish, of course! It would be a pleasure to meet you and start our classes. I believe that to live a language is to live its culture. I always encourage my students to decode the Spanish-speaking culture by learning the language. For me, to live in French is to live the culture of Quebec, because that's where I learned to speak it. If we don't learn the language of the places we are interested in, we undoubtedly miss out on a large part of the life of those places, and, in this case, La vida en español.

One more note

Given the social changes we are currently experiencing, the use of inclusive language is very important to me. In Spanish, as in other languages, words have genders (feminine, masculine and/or neutral). Beyond this, and in the same way, the expressions we use can trigger or reproduce patterns of discrimination, sexism and violence. Because of this, I try to make the Spanish I teach as inclusive as possible, since I am convinced that human rights are validated for all people (for example) in the language we speak.

Professor José Luis Chapa from Mendoza, Argentina

Hello! My name is José Luis Chapa and I live in Mendoza, Argentina. I work at the National University of Cuyo (UNCuyo) in the Arts and Portuguese departments. I am head of Practical Works in Comprehension and Production of Academic Texts and in History of the Spanish Language.
I also work at a Higher Education Institute in the disciplines of Reading, Writing and Speaking. I have taught Spanish as a Foreign Language in Brazil and within the IFSA (Institute for Study Abroad) program.
I have participated in research studies with different Argentinean and Brazilian teams on a variety of linguistic topics and conduct research on second language teaching methodology.
I am a very curious and restless person. I like exercising, photography, hiking, rollerblading with friends, biking in the park, drinking wine and dancing. I currently attend a salsa and bachata dance academy. I also enjoy watching series in other languages and traveling. My dream, in the short term, is to visit Southeast Asia. As a hobby, I like to collect teas from different parts of the world.

Speaking and teaching Spanish

Spanish is a very attractive language. Since I began my undergraduate studies, I have been passionate about learning the history of Spanish terms and their correlates in other languages, from Latin to the present day. Whenever I talk about the grammatical and cultural component of Spanish, I like to delve into the journey (etymology) of certain words, and how their structure and meaning has changed over the centuries. Understanding the process of evolution of a language helps make learning more meaningful and lasting.

Academic background

I am a university professor of Language and Literature and I have a diploma in Proofreading (spelling and style). I have a specialization in University Teaching and a master's degree in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language. I have studied and worked in teams at the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts of the National University of Cuyo, at the National Technological University (Mendoza, Argentina), at Tech University of Technology (Canary Islands, Spain), at the Faculty of Sciences and Arts of the Paulista State University (São Paulo, Brazil) and at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Vale do Rio dos Sinos (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil).

Experience

I specialize in the study of Italian, Portuguese, English and French. I am interested in analyzing my own mother tongue (Spanish, Río de la Plata dialect), alongside its corresponding Argentinian worldview.
I teach and research Spanish as a Foreign Language and Portuguese as a Foreign Language. I have taught courses in Argentina and Brazil on the Argentinian cultural component of Spanish as a Foreign Language, both in standard form and Río de la Plata dialect, on how to deal with linguistic multiplicity, on the identity and diversity of Hispanic culture, on orthographic and normative updating of the language for Spanish translators, and on false cognates between Spanish and Portuguese, among others.
